The new year is here. Although New Year’s Resolutions are things we don’t tend to keep, the new year brings thoughts of goals for the upcoming year. Making healthy eating and exercise goals for the new year can be motivating – make them small and manageable.
For instance, a good healthy eating goal for January is to try to eat at home. We have been out socializing in December, eating things we don’t normally eat. In fact, on the news they were saying that the majority of visits to the emergency room in the last week or two have been the result of allergic reactions – everything from hives to anaphylactic shock. They are attributing this to the fact that people are eating unfamiliar things and don’t really know what is in the foods they are eating.
So, in order to get back on track with healthy eating, know what you are eating by preparing your meals at home. Make a pact to buy unprocessed foods that you prepare at home. To make it easy, try making what we call “meals in a bowl” ones that have at least three of the four food groups in one bowl. This makes your meal balanced. So, for instance, soups are a good option. You can make a turkey soup with barley and vegetables, or lentil soup with lots of vegetables and serve with a dollop of yoghurt.
To help you out, we have posted one of our favourites under our Healthy Recipes – Spicy Bowl of Chickpeas. Remember that legumes (chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans) are two food groups (protein and grain), so adding vegetables makes them a complete meal!
Enjoy your January meals.
